## The Unpopular Opinion: The Most Overrated and Underrated Films of 2024
As 2024 draws to a close, we’ve witnessed a year of box office surprises and critical divides. Inevitably, some films were lauded while others were unjustly overlooked. As the UnPopular Opinion Guy, I’m here to share my take on the movies the masses got wrong. Some picks might shock you; others might anger you. But these are my honest opinions. Feel free to disagree—your opinion is what truly matters.
Overrated:
* _Wicked_: While Jon M. Chu’s adaptation successfully balances the musical’s grandeur with a tangible world, its critical acclaim was undeserved. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo deliver strong performances, but the three-hour runtime covering only half the musical overextends even the most dedicated fan’s patience. _Wicked_ is enjoyable, but it’s 2024’s most overrated film, not a Best Picture contender.
* _Challengers_: Luca Guadagnino’s melodramatic attempt at eroticism falls flat. While not a bad film, _Challengers_ fails to fully utilize Zendaya’s talent and relies on a plot twist already explored by Alfonso Cuarón. Its inclusion in numerous “Best Of” lists is a significant overstatement.
Underrated:
* _Red One_: Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ holiday action-comedy, initially a modest box office performer, became a Prime Video sensation. This blend of updated Yuletide tales, reminiscent of _Rise of the Guardians_ and _The Incredibles_, boasts a sincere message and fun action. Johnson’s subdued performance and Evans’ departure from his Captain America persona are highlights. _Red One_ deserves more recognition as a solid addition to Christmas movie canon.
* _Rebel Ridge_: Jeremy Saulnier’s most accessible film features a star-making performance from Aaron Pierre opposite Don Johnson. This timely action thriller, brimming with intense sequences, is a must-watch and deserves wider recognition beyond its Netflix debut.
Films Misunderstood:
* _Here_: Robert Zemeckis’ visually stunning film, utilizing de-aging technology and visual effects, is a beautiful and unique portrayal of generations in one location. While the technology has drawn criticism, the film’s emotional core and strong ensemble cast, including Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly, should be celebrated.
* _Argylle_: Matthew Vaughn’s attempt at launching a new franchise, starring Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, and Dua Lipa, didn’t resonate initially. However, this technicolor action-comedy with a darkly humorous edge deserves a second look. The potential for sequels and spin-offs adds to its appeal.
* _Joker: Folie à Deux_: While criticized for being derivative and for underutilizing Lady Gaga, Todd Phillips’ dark musical sequel is audacious and original. Joaquin Phoenix’s commitment to the role, alongside his exploration of Arthur Fleck’s musical talents, makes this a unique comic book adaptation.
Other Opinions:
* Glen Powell: The actor’s rapid rise to A-list status is baffling; his charisma hasn’t translated to memorable performances. The hype surrounding him is undeserved.
* _Gladiator 2_: Ridley Scott’s sequel, while featuring a talented cast (Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington), is essentially a remake of the original, lacking the same charismatic lead and offering little originality.
