Three men have been arrested and charged following a shooting and alleged kidnapping in Merritt, according to RCMP.

Officers responded to shots fired in the 1300 block of Priest Road on Friday (Nov. 15). When police arrived at the scene, a dark-colored sedan was seen fleeing the area. Mounties later found the vehicle parked at an apartment building in the 1700 block of Nicola Avenue.

People were asked to stay away from the area as armed officers were seen entering the yard of the block of flats to try and enter the target house. Capital News spoke to a local resident on the phone Friday afternoon when police used lightning and a battering ram on the door of a neighboring home.

During the confrontation, three suspects tried to escape, but they were all caught and arrested. According to Merritt RCMP Sgt. Josh Roda, police found one victim inside the home who was safe and unharmed.

Braeden Shane Drake, Mark Ethan Giesbrecht and William Joseph Lavoie are charged with taking a hostage with a firearm and entering a home without valid excuse. All are currently in custody.

“Recently there has been a brazen disregard for public safety in our community and we hope that removing these individuals from our streets will restore a sense of safety to the community,” said Sgt. Josh Roda. “We would like to thank the public for their patience as we worked diligently to mitigate further risk.”

This is the second shooting incident in Merritt in the past week. More than 100 shots were fired in several parts of the community on Tuesday, November 15. A Dodge Ram pickup is said to be connected to the shooting. The truck was found abandoned and burned Friday morning near Highway 5 and Highway 5A in the Goedy Creek Pit area.

Police said the two incidents may be related.

RCMP are asking anyone with information about the Nov. 15 kidnapping and shooting to come forward and contact the department at 250-378-4262.
