Unlike the witch out In the forest, Beam (Gen 2) is the golden hair of Sonos soundbars – good, beautiful and just right. It’s not the brand’s most powerful soundbar, but it’s the best balance of sound and size for most living rooms. Beam supports Dolby Atmos and voice assistants (Google Assistant, Alexa and Siri); processes faster than its predecessor; and it’s incredibly stylish whether on your shelf or mounted on the wall.
If the Beam is the best Sonos soundbar for most, the Arc (9/10, WIRED recommends) is the upgrade choice. Our choice for home theater setups, the incredibly powerful Arc delivers deep bass and clear sound. In certain rooms, the sound can bounce off the walls well enough to mimic a respectable surround sound system. This soundbar is the most expensive in the Sonos range, so it’s a great opportunity to upgrade and save money in the process.
A soundbar can greatly enhance your viewing experience, but a subwoofer is a nice addition to round out your sound. The subwoofer is expensive, but it’s worth it because of the richer bass it provides. You get a more balanced sound overall. If that’s too expensive, check out the newer Sonos Sub Mini ($429).

When it comes to a good old-fashioned voice-controlled speaker, the Sonos One is our pick. It can connect to your virtual assistants like Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, adding an extra layer of usefulness while still providing one of the best sound quality on the market. If you don’t want the voice control option, you can buy the Sonos One SL for $159 ($49 off) (Target) — you’ll get all the benefits of a speaker without the privacy concerns.
Do you take your music with you on the road? The Sonos Roam SL is a variation on one of our most popular portable Bluetooth speakers. It has all the features and excellent sound quality we love in the regular Roam (9/10, WIRED recommends) without voice control. Unfortunately, the wireless charging pad ($49) doesn’t come with a speaker, but with the money you’re saving, it’s technically only $17. Sounds like a win-win situation to me.
