Demi Moore’s award-winning performance in the body-horror satire “The Substance” has made the film a must-see. This darkly comedic thriller, which earned Moore her first-ever acting award – a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy – is now available for streaming.
The film, directed by Coralie Fargeat and premiering at Cannes in May, follows Moore’s character, a former Hollywood star whose career has waned. Facing the harsh realities of ageism in the industry, she seeks a revolutionary medical treatment, “The Substance,” promising rejuvenation and a renewed sense of self. However, this pursuit of perfection comes at a steep price, highlighting the pressures and anxieties imposed by the male gaze. The film also stars Margaret Qualley, Dennis Quaid, Hugo Diego Garcia, Phillip Schurer, and Joseph Balderrama.
Moore’s acceptance speech at the Golden Globes was a poignant moment, showcasing her humility and gratitude after a career spanning over 45 years. “I’m in shock right now,” she stated. “I’ve been doing this a long time…and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor.”
Director Fargeat, in an interview with Variety, described the film’s feminist themes, explaining that body horror serves as “the perfect vehicle to express the violence all these women’s issues are about.” Variety’s film critic Owen Gleiberman praised the film’s “deliriously ambitious” nature, comparing Fargeat’s directorial style to a “grindhouse Kubrick,” and lauded Moore’s “fearless” performance, noting she essentially plays a version of herself navigating the ageist expectations of Hollywood.
“The Substance” is currently available for streaming on Mubi. Those without a Mubi account can access a 7-day free trial through Prime Video, or purchase the film directly on Prime Video for $19.99.
