JSON to YAML Converter – Clean YAML for Config Files

JSON is exact and machine-friendly, but a wall of braces, quotes and commas is hard to review by eye — especially in a configuration file someone else has to approve. This free JSON to YAML converter turns pasted JSON or a dropped .json file into clean, readable YAML in one click. Choose a 2-space or 4-space indent, copy the result or download it as a .yaml file. There is no sign-up: the conversion happens locally in your browser, nothing is uploaded, so private configs never leave your machine.

How the JSON to YAML converter works

The converter reads your text with the standard JSON parser first, so anything that is not valid JSON is stopped before conversion starts. Valid data is then handed to the js-yaml library, which writes it back out as YAML using the indent you picked. Objects become indented mappings, arrays become dash lists, and strings, numbers, booleans and null keep their original types.

How to use it

Paste your JSON into the top box, or drag a .json file onto the drop area and let the file fill the box for you. Pick 2 spaces if you want compact, standard YAML, or 4 spaces if nesting is easier to scan that way. Press Convert to YAML and read the result in the lower box. From there, Copy YAML puts it on your clipboard for pasting straight into a project, and Download .yaml saves it as a file named converted.yaml.

Why YAML reads better for config files

JSON was designed for machines exchanging data, and it shows: every key needs quotes, every line ends in punctuation, and a missing comma breaks everything. YAML was designed for people maintaining files by hand. Indentation replaces braces, most strings need no quotes, and you can add comments that survive edits. That is why Kubernetes manifests, GitHub Actions workflows, Docker Compose files and countless application configs are written in YAML. Converting for reading and review, then converting back for machines, is a normal part of that workflow.

Indent, quoting and strings that look like numbers

Indentation is meaning in YAML, not decoration, so the converter uses spaces only — never tabs — and keeps every level consistent. Quoting is handled just as carefully. A plain word like example is written without quotes, because YAML does not need them. But a string that looks like something else is protected: the text “123” stays quoted as ‘123’ so it is still read back as text, not as the number 123. The same protection applies to words like true or null written as text.

What happens to arrays, booleans and null values

Arrays become lists marked with a dash on each line, and an array of objects becomes a list where each dash opens a small indented mapping — the shape you see in almost every real config file. Booleans stay as true and false, numbers stay unquoted, and a JSON null is written as null in YAML rather than being dropped or left blank. Keys keep the order they had in your JSON, so a diff against the original stays easy to follow.

Limitations worth knowing

JSON has no comments, so there are no comments to carry across, and YAML comments you want will need to be added by hand afterwards. Very deeply shared structures are written out in full each time they appear, which keeps the file simple but can make huge, heavily repeated payloads longer. The tool will not fix broken JSON: if the parser rejects the input, it shows the parser’s message so you can find the missing quote or comma. And remember the privacy point: the conversion happens locally in your browser, nothing is uploaded to a server.

JSON to YAML Converter – frequently asked questions

Is the JSON to YAML converter free?

Yes. It is completely free, needs no sign-up, and you can convert as many files as you like.

Is my JSON uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion happens locally in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and closing the page leaves nothing behind.

What happens if my JSON is invalid?

You get a friendly error that includes the JSON parser’s message, which usually points at the position of the missing comma, quote or bracket. Fix that spot and convert again.

Will my data types survive the conversion?

Yes. Numbers stay numbers, booleans stay booleans, null stays null, and a string that looks like a number, such as “123”, is quoted in the YAML so it is still read back as a string.
