Spreadsheets are where data gets collected; XML is where systems exchange it. This CSV to XML converter bridges the two in one paste: give it CSV with a header row and it produces clean, indented XML with a proper declaration — the headers become element names, each data row becomes a record element (you choose its name, and the root element’s name too). The CSV reader is a real parser, not a naive split on commas: quoted fields containing commas, doubled quotes and line breaks inside quotes are all read correctly, so an address like “12 Main St, Apt 4” survives the trip intact. Cell text is escaped for XML (&, <, > are written safely) and header names that are not legal XML element names are sanitised automatically, so the output always parses. Everything runs in your browser; the sample three-row directory below converts the moment the page loads, and you can feed the result straight into any XML tool — including this site’s XML to CSV converter, to watch it come back.
How the conversion is structured
The first CSV row is treated as the schema: its values name the elements. A row like Ana Ruiz,Valencia,Designer under headers name, city, role becomes a <row> element containing <name>Ana Ruiz</name>, <city>Valencia</city> and <role>Designer</role> — or rename “row” to “person” and “rows” to “people” with the two name fields and the shape follows your target format instead. Headers that cannot legally name an XML element — “First Name” with its space, “1st_city” starting with a digit — are normalised by replacing invalid characters with underscores and prefixing an underscore where needed; the data itself is never altered, only the tag names. Empty cells become empty elements, rows shorter than the header get empty elements for the missing tail, and extra cells beyond the header are ignored rather than silently misfiled.
Worked example
The sample CSV is a three-person directory. Converted with the defaults, the output is a <rows> document holding three <row> elements, each with name, city and role children — the exact document shape that the XML to CSV converter on this site flattens back into the original three rows. Try the quoting rules before you trust them with real data: change a cell to "Ruiz, Ana" (quoted, comma inside) and convert — the XML gets the full “Ruiz, Ana” as one value. Add a quote inside a value by doubling it in the CSV ("say ""hi""") and it round-trips as say "hi", then gets re-escaped for XML. These are the cases that break naive converters, and they are handled here by a proper character-by-character CSV parser.
What this converter does not do
CSV has one table in it, so the XML has one record type: there is no nesting beyond root → row → fields, because the source has no nesting to express. Attributes are not generated — XML attributes would require a naming convention the CSV does not carry, and inventing one would surprise more often than it helped. Data types are not inferred either: 9.99 stays text, because in CSV everything is text, and a converter that guesses types corrupts things like postcodes with leading zeros. If your target system needs typed values, namespaces or a specific schema, treat this output as the correct structural first draft and refine it from there — the shape, escaping and well-formedness are already right.
Frequently asked questions
Does the first row have to be headers?
Yes — the first row names the elements. If your CSV has no header row, add one before converting; the converter cannot invent meaningful names from data.
How are commas inside values handled?
Wrap the field in double quotes, as standard CSV does: "Ruiz, Ana" is one value. The parser honours quotes, doubled quotes and line breaks inside quoted fields.
What if my headers have spaces?
They are converted to underscores — “First Name” becomes the element <First_Name>. Your data values are untouched; only tag names are sanitised.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Parsing and XML writing both happen in JavaScript in your browser tab, and the downloaded file is generated locally.
