HSL is the colour language designers sketch in — “a teal at 175 degrees, quite saturated, fairly dark” — but screens, images and most code libraries ultimately consume RGB triplets and hex codes. This HSL to RGB converter does that last translation. Type a hue (0–359 around the colour wheel), a saturation and a lightness (both 0–100%), and you get the exact RGB values, the hex code and copy-ready CSS, with a live swatch proving the colour you described is the colour you meant. It is the natural second half of palette work: you design the family in HSL, stepping lightness for shades and states, then export each step to RGB or hex for the tools that demand them. The preloaded values — 175, 77%, 26% — are a deep teal whose RGB answer is 15, 118, 110, a conversion you can spot-check against any colour reference. No uploads, no accounts; the maths happens in your browser.
How HSL becomes RGB
The conversion works through chroma — how much colour the lightness allows. From lightness 26% and saturation 77%, chroma C = (1 − |2×0.26 − 1|) × 0.77 ≈ 0.40. Hue 175° sits in the segment between cyan (180°) and green (120°), closer to cyan, so the second component X comes out near 0.37 with green taking the full chroma. Adding the match point m = L − C/2 ≈ 0.06 to each channel and scaling by 255 gives R ≈ 15, G ≈ 118, B ≈ 110 — the teal in the swatch. The six hue segments are why the wheel is divided at 60° intervals: each segment has one channel at full chroma, one at zero, and one ramping between them, which is all the geometry a conversion needs. Greys are the degenerate case: at saturation 0, chroma is 0, every channel equals the lightness, and hue stops meaning anything.
Where the RGB answer gets used
Plenty of surfaces refuse HSL. Canvas 2D code often builds colours from channel numbers in image-processing loops; game engines and native app frameworks typically store colours as RGB floats or hex; data tools export RGB; and older email clients accept hex but choke on modern CSS colour functions. So the workflow repeats everywhere: a palette designed in a tool that speaks HSL (most design apps do) must be handed to an environment that speaks RGB. Converting each palette step deliberately — instead of eyeballing a picker back and forth — keeps the family relationships intact: steps that share a hue and saturation in HSL stay visibly related in RGB, and a lightness ladder stays a ladder. The hex output covers the compact-notation tools, and the CSS line pairs the rgb() and hsl() forms so a stylesheet can carry whichever your conventions prefer.
Precision notes before you rely on it
RGB channels are integers, so an HSL colour lands on the nearest channel values — for almost every purpose exact, but a round trip HSL → RGB → HSL can move a percentage point when the original percentages were themselves rounded from another conversion. If a colour must match a brand specification precisely, convert once from the canonical values and store the RGB result rather than converting back and forth. Also note the wheel wraps: hue 360 is hue 0 (red), negative hues are folded back into range by this tool, and hues like 175 only look “between” named colours because the named landmarks (red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, yellow) are just six points on a continuous circle.
Frequently asked questions
What RGB is hsl(175, 77%, 26%)?
rgb(15, 118, 110), hex #0f766e — the converter is preloaded with it, and the swatch shows the deep teal.
Why is saturation 0 always grey?
Saturation is the amount of chroma. At zero there is none, so all channels equal the lightness — pure grey scale, whatever the hue says.
Does lightness 50% mean a “medium” colour?
It means halfway between black and the colour’s most vivid form at that hue and saturation. Perceived brightness still varies by hue — yellows look lighter than blues at the same L — but the scale is consistent.
Can I enter hue 360?
Yes; the tool folds it to 0 (red), since the wheel is a circle. Values beyond one full turn wrap the same way.
