Why three modes?
Different jobs need different shapes of filler. Paragraphs are for layouts: blog templates, landing pages, print mock-ups — anywhere you need to judge typography, spacing and rhythm across a full text block. Sentences are for components: cards, captions, testimonials, notifications, table cells — UI pieces that hold a line or two, where a full paragraph would overflow and hide the design flaw you are looking for. Words are for precision work: headlines of exactly twelve words, meta-length tests, truncation checks, and anywhere a spec says “about 40 words”. A generator with only a paragraph mode forces you to generate, paste, and hand-trim — this one just asks how much you need.
The classic start, and when to skip it
The traditional opening — “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.” — is the most recognised filler text on Earth, which is both its strength and its weakness. Use it for first pages and hero sections, where the reader should instantly understand “this is a mock-up”. Skip it for interior pages and realistic prototypes: text that starts mid-vocabulary reads more like real content, so reviewers judge the design instead of reading the famous first line for the hundredth time. Where lorem ipsum comes from
The text is a scrambled excerpt of Cicero’s de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (45 BC), a treatise on ethics — the famous first words corrupt “dolorem ipsum” (“pain itself”). Typesetters have used it since the 1500s, and it survives because its letter distribution approximates ordinary Latin-derived prose: a realistic mix of word lengths and common letter pairs, without forming sentences anyone stops to read. That is also its limit: for audiences who would be distracted or confused by pseudo-Latin — user-testing participants, some clients — plain-language filler in their own language often works better, which is why this site also keeps Spanish filler generators.
