Amy Schumer’s recent revelation on the *Call Her Daddy* podcast sheds light on how online criticism led to a significant health diagnosis. A year ago, Schumer became the target of intense online scrutiny over her appearance, with many commenting on her “moon face.” Initially dismissing the comments as typical internet trolling, she reconsidered when medical professionals joined the conversation on social media, pointing out that her facial changes were unusual.
Doctors’ online observations prompted Schumer to connect the dots. She recalled doctors commenting, “No, something’s really going on. Your face looks unusual.” This led to speculation of Cushing syndrome, a condition characterized by a rounded face, a fatty hump between the shoulders, and stretch marks, resulting from prolonged exposure to high cortisol levels. The cause, she discovered, was steroid injections she received for scars from a previous breast reduction surgery and a cesarean section following the birth of her son in 2019.
Schumer admitted that the relentless online criticism was instrumental in her seeking medical attention and ultimately receiving a diagnosis of Cushing syndrome in February 2024. She confessed, “I wouldn’t have known if the internet hadn’t come for me so hard.” This diagnosis coincided with filming the comedy *Kinda Pregnant*, adding another layer of difficulty as she navigated self-consciousness about her appearance despite receiving compliments from those around her. Director Lorraine Caffery’s support was particularly crucial, with her encouragement bolstering Schumer’s confidence. Caffery’s simple statement, “‘You know, I think you look f*ing great,'” proved to be invaluable during a challenging time.
