Circle Crop Image — Round Photos with Transparent Corners, Free

Profile pictures are round almost everywhere — WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, X, LinkedIn, every comment section on the internet. Upload a square photo and each app crops it its own way, usually through the middle of someone’s forehead. This free tool lets you make the round crop: upload any image, drag it inside the circle, zoom until the framing is right, and download a PNG with transparent corners at 256, 512 or 1024 pixels.

The crop is computed entirely in your browser. Your photo is never uploaded, there is no watermark and no account stands between you and the download.

Why the round version needs its own tool

A circle is not a square with the corners hidden. When an app displays your square upload inside a round mask, everything near the corners disappears — about 22% of the square’s area — and the app chooses the centre without knowing where the faces are. Making the circle yourself flips that: you see the exact final shape while you frame it, and the exported PNG has genuinely transparent corners, so the round image sits correctly on any background — a website team page, a slide, a video overlay, a document. Sites and apps that accept the PNG display your circle; sites that re-mask it get a circle inside their circle, identical either way.

How to frame a circle crop well

Three habits separate a good round avatar from a cropped accident. Leave headroom: keep the top of the head (or the top of your logo) a clear margin inside the ring, because many apps display the circle slightly tighter in lists than on profile pages. Centre the eyes, not the head: faces read best when the eye line sits a little above the circle’s centre. Zoom with restraint: filling the ring edge-to-edge feels bold at 1024 pixels and claustrophobic at the 32-pixel size of a comment avatar. Use the drag to reposition and the zoom slider to breathe, then export at 512 — large enough for every profile page, small enough to upload anywhere. For a group photo, crop one person out square first with the image cropper, then round them here.

Logos, products and round badges

The tool is not only for faces. Round logo badges for website footers and app directories, circular product thumbnails for shop grids, “verified-style” avatar frames for course instructors, speaker photos for conference pages — all of them are the same job: a centred subject, a clean ring, transparent surroundings. Illustrations and icons work beautifully: zoom so the mark occupies about 70% of the diameter and the badge reads at favicon-adjacent sizes. If the source is a logo on a coloured background rather than transparency, the circle keeps that background inside the ring — usually exactly the badge look you want.

Export sizes and formats

Exports are always PNG, because only PNG (among the universal formats) carries the transparent corners a circle needs. 256×256 suits comment avatars and chat lists. 512×512 — the default — is the profile-picture standard and matches the size our 512×512 resizer targets for icons. 1024×1024 is for print-adjacent uses: slides, posters and team pages displayed large. Pick the biggest size your destination displays; downscaling later is free, inventing pixels is not.

Test the circle at postage-stamp size

Before you commit, shrink the preview: zoom your browser out, or glance at the exported PNG in a file grid at its smallest view. Avatars spend their lives tiny — in comment threads, chat lists and notification trays — and a crop that sings at 512 pixels can turn to soup at 32. If the subject dissolves at small size, zoom in a step and re-export; bold and simple beats detailed and lost. It takes ten seconds, and it is the test every professional avatar quietly passes.
