WhatsApp profile pictures are square, and most photos are not — so the app’s own cropper cheerfully cuts off heads, feet or half the group. This free DP maker takes the other route, the same trick our passport photo makers use: the full photo sits sharp in the middle, and the empty bands are filled with a blurred, darkened copy of the photo itself. Nothing is cropped, and it looks deliberate rather than padded.
Prefer a plain background? Switch to a solid colour instead. Exports are proper square PNGs up to 1024 × 1024, made entirely in your browser.
How to make a WhatsApp DP
- Click the file box and choose any photo — wide, tall, whatever you have.
- Leave the background on Blurred photo fill and adjust the blur, or switch to a solid colour.
- Tick Preview as a circle to see the picture the way chat lists show it, and check nothing important hugs the corners.
- Click Download DP (PNG), then set it in WhatsApp: Settings → your name → profile photo.
A worked example, with the numbers
A wide 3000 × 2000 group photo into a 640 × 640 DP. WhatsApp’s own crop would keep only the middle 2000 × 2000 — a third of the group gone. Here, the photo is scaled by the contain ratio 640 ÷ 3000 ≈ 0.213 to 640 × 427, centred with about 107 px bands above and below. Those bands are filled by the same photo scaled to cover (640 × 960, cropped by the square) and blurred at 24 px, so the colours match the scene and all six people stay in frame.
Why the blurred fill beats the alternatives
- Versus cropping: nobody loses their head, and wide group shots survive.
- Versus black bars: the fill uses your photo’s own colours, so it reads as a soft backdrop, not an error.
- Versus stretching: faces keep their real proportions. Always.
- Solid colour still wins for logos and text graphics, where a blurry echo of the design would look messy — hence the option.
What WhatsApp does with your DP
- Square in, circle out: the file is square, but chats display it in a circle. Keep subjects away from the corners.
- 640 × 640 is plenty: WhatsApp compresses profile pictures hard; the 1024 export is for using the same square elsewhere (Telegram, X, forums).
- Status and calls reuse it: the same picture appears across the app, so pick one that reads well small — a face should fill a good share of the frame.
Honest limitations
The fill bands are decoration, not information: an extremely wide panorama will still be small in the middle — for those, cropping the centre strip in our photo editor first gives a bigger subject. The tool fits one photo per DP; it does not add text or frames (our text tool can label the result afterwards if you want a name on it).
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a DP from a screenshot?
Yes — screenshots are just images. Tall phone screenshots work especially well with the blurred fill, because their own colours tint the side bands. Crop away status bars first in the photo editor if they are visible.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a WhatsApp DP be?
At least 640 × 640 for a crisp result on modern phones. This tool’s default is exactly that; 320 is the lightweight option, 1024 the maximum-quality one.
Why does WhatsApp still crop my picture a little?
If your export is square it should not crop at all. Make sure you uploaded the downloaded PNG, not the original photo — an easy mix-up in a crowded gallery.
Can I use this for other apps?
Yes — any service that wants a square profile picture (Telegram, Signal, Discord, forums) can use the same file.
