URL Shortener — Free Short Links with Custom Alias

Paste a long link below and get a short one in seconds. You can pick your own custom alias too, so the short link is easy to read and remember. There is no account to create and nothing to install. The tool runs fully in your browser and sends your link to the free is.gd shortening service, which returns a short link that redirects to your page.

How the shortener works

Type or paste the full destination link, starting with http:// or https://. If you want a readable short link, type a custom alias as well. Press Shorten and the tool asks is.gd to create the link. A moment later you get a short address like is.gd/abc123, plus a copy button. Open it once yourself to check it lands on the right page before you share it anywhere.

Custom aliases

Aliases are first come, first served. If someone already took the alias you want, is.gd says so plainly and you can try another one. Aliases may only use letters, numbers and the underscore character. Hyphens, spaces and other symbols are rejected by is.gd, and this tool tells you that rule before you send anything, so you do not waste a try. Keep aliases short, readable and honest about where the link goes. A clear alias earns more clicks than a random string, because people can see it is not hiding anything strange.

When short links help

Short links are useful wherever long addresses look messy or break. Social posts, text messages, printed flyers, slides and video descriptions all work better with a short link. They are also easier to read out loud. If you print a link on paper, a short one is far less likely to be typed wrong. For links you share every day, a custom alias doubles as a tiny brand: the same alias style across your posts makes your links easy to spot.

What this tool does not do

These free tools do not include hosted click analytics, custom domains, password-protected hosted links or media hosting. Those features need an account and a backend server, and this page has neither. What you get here is the short link itself, created instantly and free. If you need to count clicks, add tracking labels to the destination link with a UTM builder, or use your own analytics on the destination page.

Limits to know, stated plainly

Your short link lives on is.gd, not on this site. That means is.gd controls the redirect. If is.gd ever went down or changed its rules, your short links could stop working, and nobody here could fix them for you. Short links are also public: anyone who sees the short address can open it, so never use a short link to hide a private page, a login page or anything sensitive. A short link does not make a destination private. It only makes the address shorter. Test every link, keep a private list of which short link points where, and avoid shortening links you do not own or trust.

Short links and QR codes

A short link pairs well with a QR code. Print the short link under the code so people without a camera can still type it. Our free QR code generator and decoder tool makes a code for any link, including the short ones you create here. Use the two together on flyers, menus and posters: the code for phones, the short link for everyone else.

Testing before you share

Always open a new short link once in a private browser window before you publish it. Check three things: it lands on the right page, the page loads fast, and nothing on the destination looks broken or different from what you expected. A thirty-second test catches the two most common mistakes, which are a pasted address with a typo and an alias that points to an older version of a page. Once a short link is printed or posted widely, fixing it means reprinting or reposting, so the test is worth far more than the half minute it costs.
