Remembering Jean Edson: A Life Dedicated to Family, Community, and Passion

Shelba “Jean” Edson (Riley), a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and community activist, passed away peacefully in her home in Chico, California, on May 7, 2024, at the age of 83.

A Legacy of Unwavering Love and Family

Jean was born on July 26, 1940, in Clarkville, Arkansas, to William and Lillian Riley. Her life was filled with love and unwavering support for her family. She is survived by her daughters, Kathryn Edson, Nancy Ellis, and Theresa Edson, as well as five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A Passion for Community Involvement

Jean was a dedicated member of the Woman’s Auxiliary of Chico and a Sorority sister for 50 years. Her passion for community involvement extended to actively supporting charities and volunteering for our veterans. She found solace and community at the Community Church of God, where she was an active member.

A Career of Impact

After graduating from Ponca City High School, Jean went on to earn her degree in Travel at Foothill College. She retired from the Parks and Recreation Department in San Jose, leaving a lasting impact on her community. She was known for her hard work and dedication, always striving to make a difference in the lives of others.

A Full and Vibrant Life

Outside of her professional and community endeavors, Jean found joy in world travel, gardening, and spending time with her friends. She loved her flower garden, indulging in yard sales, and sharing her adventurous spirit with those around her.

A Farewell to a Cherished Soul

Jean Edson’s passing is a deep loss for her family, friends, and the communities she touched throughout her life. Her unwavering passion, dedication, and vibrant spirit will continue to inspire those who knew her. A burial service will be held on Thursday, May 30th, at 10 AM at Chico Cemetery (881 Mangrove Ave., Chico, CA).
