Mary Ellen Freeman-Jones, Beloved Educator and Community Figure, Passes Away at 93
Cullman, Alabama – The Cullman community is mourning the loss of Mary Ellen Freeman-Jones, a beloved educator and community figure who passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the age of 93.
Mrs. Freeman-Jones was born on August 9, 1930, in Cullman to D.P. McAfee and Willie Belle Jobe. She graduated from Cullman High School in 1948 and went on to earn a Master’s in English Education from various institutions including the University of Alabama, UAB, and St. Bernard.
A Dedicated Educator
Mrs. Freeman-Jones had a long and distinguished career in education, teaching in the Cullman County Schools system for over 30 years. She taught grades 1 through 9, primarily at the junior high level, and was a beloved cheerleading sponsor. In addition, she taught English at Wallace State Community College.
Mrs. Freeman-Jones was passionate about her students and went above and beyond to ensure their success. She was known for her dedication, her enthusiasm for learning, and her ability to connect with her students on a personal level.
A Community Leader
Beyond her work as an educator, Mrs. Freeman-Jones was deeply involved in the Cullman community. She was an active member of 7th Street Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 26 years. She was also a member of the Cullman High School Alumni Class of 1948.
Mrs. Freeman-Jones was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. She volunteered countless hours of her time to various organizations, including the Donald Green Center, where she enjoyed staying fit with friends.
A Loving Family
Mrs. Freeman-Jones was preceded in death by her first husband, Millard J Freeman, who was the father of her children, and her second husband, J. Paul Jones. She is survived by her son, Delbert (Sabre) Freeman; daughter, Betty (Rodney) Kinney; grandchildren, Shannon (Robert) Malone, Shawn (Kim) Striker, Caleb (Amanda) Freeman, Joshua Freeman, and Jonathan (Summer) Freeman; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Freeman-Jones was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Funeral Arrangements
A funeral service for Mrs. Freeman-Jones will be held at noon on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home. The service will be officiated by Kerry Cleghorn and Rev. Delbert Freeman. Burial will follow at Logan Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home.
