Mickey passed away peacefully at her Waterville home on January 14, 2024, at the age of 88, surrounded by her loving family.
A Journey of Love, Family, and Connection
Born in Staten Island, New York, in 1935, Mickey’s early life was shaped by her experiences during World War II and her family’s encounters with Nazi sympathizers. Her childhood took an unexpected turn when her family moved to Yorktown, Manhattan, where she attended the exclusive Walden School. Despite her sense of being an outsider among affluent classmates, Mickey discovered her passion for reading and honed her inquisitive nature.
After graduating from New York University with an English degree, Mickey embarked on a career as a case manager with the Bureau of Child Welfare. This transformative experience opened her eyes to the systemic challenges faced by marginalized communities and instilled in her a deep compassion for those in need.
In 1959, a blind date brought Mickey and John Mizner together, a serendipitous meeting that blossomed into a lifelong love story. John, a doctoral candidate at the University of Pennsylvania, provided the stability and support that Mickey craved. Together, they navigated the complexities of their pasts and found solace in each other’s embrace.
In 1963, John accepted a teaching position at Colby College, bringing the couple to Waterville. Mickey embraced her new home, immersing herself in the community and raising her two children, Sarah and David, with boundless love and care.
A Life of Purpose and Enrichment
Mickey’s life in Waterville was filled with purpose and fulfillment. She found joy in the simple pleasures of raising her family, fostering meaningful relationships, and pursuing her passions. Her love of books led her to become a regular at Waterville’s bookstores and participate in lively discussions with fellow bibliophiles.
Beyond her family, Mickey dedicated herself to giving back to the community. She obtained a degree in speech therapy from the University of Maine Orono and worked in local elementary schools, helping students overcome speech impediments. Her empathetic nature and unwavering belief in the potential of all children made her an influential figure in the lives of countless young learners.
Mickey’s social conscience extended beyond the classroom. She was a vocal advocate for social justice, publicly challenging racism and standing up for the rights of the marginalized. Her unwavering commitment to making a positive difference in the world left an enduring legacy in Waterville and beyond.
A Legacy of Love and Friendship
Throughout her life, Mickey cultivated and cherished deep friendships. She had an exceptional ability to connect with people from all walks of life, creating an extended family that brought her endless joy.
In her later years, Mickey’s unwavering spirit shone through despite the challenges of illness. She embraced her “new chapter” with enthusiasm, discovering a talent for writing and spending countless hours with her beloved cats, Maxi, Isabelle, Wesley, and Lucy.
As her final days approached, the nurses and home health aides who cared for Mickey became her trusted companions. Their compassion and dedication allowed her to pass away peacefully in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by the love of those who had touched her life.
