Button Style Generator – Design Buttons and Copy the Style

Use the free Button Style Generator below: your data never leaves your browser — all work happens on your device, and nothing is uploaded to any server.

Design a Button People Actually Want to Click

Buttons carry the most important job on a page: they turn a reader into an action. A well-designed button is easy to spot, easy to read and clearly clickable. A weak button hides in the layout, confuses the eye or looks like plain text. The tool above lets you shape a button with padding, corner radius, shadow and hover colour, then copy the finished CSS.

Start with the words. A button should say what happens next: Get the Guide, Start Free, Download Now. Vague labels like Click Here or Submit force the reader to guess, and guessing costs clicks. Keep the label short, start with a verb, and use the same style for the same kind of action across your site.

Padding: Give the Label Room

Padding is the space inside the button around the words. Generous padding makes a button feel confident and easy to tap, especially on phones, where small tap targets frustrate fingers. A good starting point is 14 pixels vertical and 28 pixels horizontal for a standard button, with more for a primary call to action.

Padding also sets the button hierarchy. Your main action gets the most padding; secondary actions get less. When every button on a page has the same size, nothing stands out. When the primary action is clearly larger, the eye finds it first and the page feels guided rather than cluttered.

Radius and Shadow: Shape and Depth

Corner radius sets the personality. Sharp corners feel technical and formal; slightly rounded corners feel friendly and modern; fully rounded pill buttons feel playful and casual. Match the radius to your brand and keep it consistent: mixing sharp and pill buttons on one page looks accidental.

Shadow lifts the button off the page and signals that it can be pressed. A soft, short shadow suits most designs. A long, dark shadow looks heavy and dated, while no shadow at all can make a button blend into a coloured background. The slider in the tool lets you find the point where the button lifts without floating away.

Hover Colour: The Moment of Feedback

Hover colour is the button’s way of answering the cursor. When the pointer arrives, the button should change visibly: a slightly darker or lighter shade of the same colour is the safest choice. A hover colour unrelated to the normal colour feels like a glitch, and no hover change at all leaves desktop users unsure whether the element is clickable.

Remember that hover does not exist on touchscreens, so the normal state must already read as a button without it. Colour contrast, padding and shadow do that job on mobile. Test your button on a phone as well as a desktop: if it only looks like a button when hovered, mobile visitors will miss it entirely.

Copy the CSS and Keep It Consistent

Press Copy CSS and paste the code into your stylesheet. The code includes the normal state and the hover state, so both travel together. Apply the same class to every button of that kind, and define at most three button styles for a site: primary, secondary and quiet. More than three and the visual language fragments.

Check contrast before you publish. Button text must be readable against the button colour for all users, including users with low vision. White text on teal, dark text on yellow and white text on dark blue usually pass; light grey text on a pale colour usually fails. A contrast checker takes ten seconds and prevents a button nobody can read.

Finally, test the button in place. A button that looks strong alone can vanish beside a bold image or clash with a neighbouring button. Place it in the real layout, check it on a phone, and confirm the label still reads at a glance. The best button style is the one that survives contact with the real page.
