Richard Edward Harrington, a respected and cherished member of the Waterville community, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2024, at the age of 85. Throughout his life, Richard embodied the values of a loving husband, devoted father, and tireless worker, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, dedication, and unwavering spirit.

Early Years and Career

Richard was born on July 5, 1938, in Gardiner, Maine, to Byron and Clara Harrington. After graduating high school, he began his career at the Lipman Poultry Plant. His passion for plumbing and heating soon became evident, and he transitioned to a fulfilling career in that field. Richard worked for various companies, including Thayer Hospital, where he specialized in both commercial and residential projects.

In the late 1970s, Richard founded Dick’s Plumbing and Heating, a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering dedication to his craft. He ran his business with the utmost integrity and precision, earning the respect and admiration of his clients and colleagues alike.

Life’s Passions and Joys

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Richard had a deep-seated love for hot rod cars. He relished the thrill of big engines and loud exhaust systems, and his stories about his younger days in Chelsea and his beloved cars were always met with laughter and admiration.

Richard was known by many affectionate nicknames, including “Dick,” “Dickie,” “Papa Smurf,” “Smiley,” and “Grump” (a playful name given to him by his grandchildren). These nicknames reflected his warm and playful nature, which endeared him to all who knew him.

Richard’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. Together with his beloved wife, Joanne, he shared countless moments of happiness and adventure. They traveled extensively, taking bus trips to various cities and casinos. They also enjoyed camping, brook fishing, dancing the night away at local events, and playing cards with friends.

In retirement, Richard and Joanne cherished their time together, going for scenic drives and dining out at their favorite restaurants, including Wasses. Above all, their love for their family was unwavering, and they took every opportunity to create lasting memories with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

A Legacy of Love and Hard Work

Richard Edward Harrington will be remembered as a man of unwavering character and unwavering commitment to family and work. His legacy extends beyond his own lifetime, inspiring all who knew him to strive for excellence and to cherish the simple joys of life.

Celebration of Life

To honor Richard’s memory, his daughters, Diana (Dwain) McKenney, Holly (Skip) Lemar, and Tara Harrington (Peter Howard), will host a Celebration of Life on Sunday, June 30, from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m., at the Sheepscot Fish and Game Clubhouse Route 3, Palermo. All who knew Richard are welcome to attend and share their memories and condolences.

In Memoriam

Richard is survived by his daughters, Diana, Holly, and Tara; grandchildren, Hillary (Rob) Turner, Tory (JJ) Winters, Haley (Chris) Cromwell, Nathaniel, and Nicholas Howard; seven great-grandchildren; his brother, Paul; brother-in-law, Michael; and sister-in-law, Mary Keller; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joanne; sister, Pauline; brother, Byron Jr.; and his parents, Byron and Clara Harrington.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to an animal shelter of your choice.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Beacon House Hospice for their attentive and compassionate care during Richard’s final days.
