Use the free XLSX to Markdown Table Converter below: your data never leaves your browser — all work happens on your device, and nothing is uploaded to any server.
What this tool does
Spreadsheets are great for numbers, but terrible for documentation. When you need to show a table in a README, a wiki page, a GitHub issue, or a blog post written in Markdown, retyping an Excel sheet by hand is slow and invites errors. This free XLSX to Markdown Table Converter reads a locally chosen Excel file in your browser with SheetJS and renders the selected sheet as a Markdown table you can paste anywhere.
Nothing is uploaded. You pick the file, the tool reads it on your device, and the Markdown appears in the output box. If the workbook has several sheets, a dropdown lets you pick the one you want before converting.
How to use it
Press Choose .xlsx file and pick your Excel workbook. The sheet dropdown fills with the workbook’s sheet names. Select a sheet if it is not already the right one, then press Convert to Markdown. The output box shows the table, with the first row as the header and a separator row of dashes beneath it.
Use Copy Markdown to place the table on your clipboard, or Download .md to save it as a Markdown file. Paste the result into any Markdown editor, and it renders as a formatted table.
What the Markdown looks like
The first row of the sheet becomes the table header. The second line is the separator row, one set of dashes per column. Every following row becomes one Markdown row, with cells separated by pipe characters. Empty cells become empty Markdown cells, so column counts stay consistent even when a row has gaps.
Values that contain a pipe character are escaped, so a cell reading “cats | dogs” does not break the table layout. Numbers and dates are carried over as the values stored in the sheet, which keeps the result predictable: what you see in the cell is what lands in the Markdown.
Common uses
Developers paste converted tables into project documentation, changelogs, and pull request descriptions. Technical writers move reference tables from spreadsheets into docs sites without retyping. Teachers turn grade sheets and vocabulary lists into pages for a class wiki. Support teams turn internal spreadsheets into help articles.
The tool also helps when a table must be reviewed in plain text. Markdown tables can be diffed in version control, unlike binary spreadsheets, so converting a sheet to Markdown makes changes visible line by line in a code review.
Tips for clean results
First, tidy the sheet before converting: delete empty rows at the top, because the first row becomes the header. Second, keep cell values short. Very long paragraphs inside a cell make Markdown rows hard to read, even though they still render correctly. Third, check merged cells. A merged header in Excel becomes repeated or empty cells in Markdown, so unmerge headers or accept the repetition before pasting.
Fourth, remember that formatting does not carry over. Bold text, colours, and number formats stay in the spreadsheet; the Markdown carries values only. If a column needs a currency symbol or a percentage sign, add it to the values in the sheet first, or edit the Markdown afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Is my Excel file uploaded? No. SheetJS reads the file locally in your browser. The workbook never leaves your device, and nothing is stored on any server.
Which sheets can I convert? Any sheet in a standard .xlsx workbook. Pick the sheet from the dropdown after choosing the file. Very old .xls files are not supported; re-save those as .xlsx first.
What about formulas? Converted values are the stored results of formulas, not the formulas themselves. That is usually what documentation needs: the numbers people see, not the calculation behind them.
Can I convert a huge sheet? Sheets with thousands of rows convert, but the Markdown becomes very long. For documentation, converting a filtered or summarised copy of the sheet usually reads better.
