CSV Column Selector – Keep, Drop and Reorder CSV Columns Free Online

Use the free CSV Column Selector below: your data never leaves your browser — all work happens on your device, and nothing is uploaded to any server.

What this tool does

Real CSV files are often wider than you need. An export may carry twenty columns when your report needs four, or the columns may arrive in an order that suits the source system rather than your reader. This free CSV Column Selector lets you keep, drop, and reorder columns in your browser with the PapaParse CSV parser, and it downloads a clean CSV containing only what you chose, in the order you chose.

Load a CSV by pasting it or choosing a file. Checkboxes appear for every column, with up and down buttons to change the order. Press Apply selection, and the output box shows the trimmed CSV, ready to download.

How to use it

Paste your CSV or choose a file, then press Load columns. The tool reads the header row and lists each column with a checkbox and move buttons. Uncheck any column you do not need. Use the up and down arrows to move a column earlier or later in the output. Press Apply selection, then Download CSV to save the result.

Try a sample first if you want to practise: a small name, age, and city table loads, and you can drop the age column or move city to the front to see how the output changes.

Why trimming columns helps

Extra columns cause real problems. They confuse readers, they break imports that expect a fixed layout, and they can leak sensitive fields into a file meant for sharing. A payroll export, for example, may include internal IDs and salary bands alongside the names you actually need. Selecting columns before sharing is a simple privacy habit that prevents accidental disclosure.

Order matters too. A report that leads with the customer’s name reads better than one that buries it after five system fields. Reordering columns before download means the spreadsheet opens in the order your reader expects, with no manual dragging afterwards.

Working with wide exports

Exports from CRMs, shops, and analytics tools are famously wide. They include every field the system tracks, including ones you will never use. The usual workflow is to open the file, delete columns one by one, and hope you did not delete the wrong one. Selecting columns by checkbox is faster and safer, because the original file is never modified; you always download a new file.

If the same export arrives weekly, the same selection can be repeated in seconds. Keep a note of the columns you keep, and each new file takes the same few clicks. That repeatability is one reason to do the trimming in a dedicated tool rather than by hand in a spreadsheet.

Tips for clean results

First, confirm the header row is correct before selecting. If the CSV has no header, the first data row becomes the column list, which produces wrong labels. Add a header row to the file first in that case. Second, check for duplicate column names. Two columns both called “Name” are hard to tell apart in the list, so rename one in the source before loading.

Third, verify the output row count matches the input. Dropping columns never changes the number of rows, so a mismatch means something else went wrong, such as an unclosed quote in the source file. PapaParse reports such rows faithfully, but a quick count check catches surprises early.

Frequently asked questions

Is my CSV uploaded? No. Parsing happens in your browser with PapaParse. Your file never leaves your device, and the trimmed result is generated locally.

Does it change my original file? Never. The tool only reads your paste or file and writes a new CSV for download. Your original stays exactly as it was.

Can I reorder as well as drop columns? Yes. The up and down buttons move a column in the output order, and the selection applies in that order, not the original order.

What if a column name contains a comma? Quoted headers are parsed correctly, so a header like “Last, First” appears as one column, not two.
