Remembering Kathie Watson: A Legacy of Love and Adventure
May 28, 2024
A Life Devoted to Family and Community
Kathleen “Kathie” Watson, a woman of extraordinary love, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2024, with her cherished family by her side. Her life was a tapestry woven with memories of love, adventure, and unwavering devotion to her family and community.
Kathie was born on November 21, 1946, to Lieutenant Ted and Virginia Mullin at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. Her family’s life was filled with military transfers, but Bellevue, Nebraska, held a special place in Kathie’s heart as she attended grades 7-12 there while her father served at Offutt Air Force Base.
After graduating from high school, Kathie pursued her passion for cosmetology and modeling in Omaha. She eventually relocated to California to join her parents for an unforgettable trip to Japan before her father’s retirement from the Air Force. Upon their return to the United States, Kathie had the unique opportunity to sail home aboard the USS Breckinridge, bringing home the first 1,300 marines from the Vietnam War.
Kathie’s heart led her to a fulfilling career in healthcare. She met and married Lewis “Gerry” Watson, a Chico native. Their love for Chico blossomed as Kathie became an active participant in the community, serving as a room mom, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and PTA officer. Her tireless efforts earned her the PTA Honorary Service Award.
A Love for Adventure
Kathie’s adventurous spirit extended beyond her family and community. She and her family shared a love for the outdoors, embarking on camping, hiking, boating, water skiing, and creek exploration adventures in Bidwell Park. Together, they traveled extensively, creating unforgettable memories from Canada to Mexico and countless destinations in between.
Kathie’s love for travel continued throughout her life. She enjoyed cruises, air travel, and road trips with her husband, Gerry. Their passion for classic cars led them to join the national and local Early Ford V8 clubs, where they proudly displayed their prized 1934 Ford Bonnie and Clyde Special and 1948 Ford Super Deluxe sedan at car meets across the western United States and Canada.
A Legacy of Faith and Gratitude
Kathie found solace and strength in her faith. Her relationship with Jesus Christ sustained her during her courageous 10-year battle with cancer. Her gratitude extended to the compassionate medical team at Enloe Cancer Center, who provided exceptional care throughout her journey.
In lieu of flowers, Kathie requested donations to ChicoMealsonWheels.org or StandUp2Cancer.org/research. Her memory will continue to inspire countless lives, leaving an enduring legacy of love, adventure, and unwavering determination.
A Celebration of a Life Well-Lived
A celebration of Kathie’s life will be held at a later date. Her family invites those who wish to honor her memory to make a donation to one of the organizations she held dear.
Kathie Watson, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, will forever be remembered for her infectious laughter, unwavering spirit, and the exceptional love she shared with all who knew her. Her legacy will continue to inspire and guide generations to come.
