A reference list that is out of order looks unfinished, and in styles like APA, MLA and Harvard the list must be alphabetical. Sorting a long list by hand is slow, and it is easy to misplace one entry near the end when you are tired. This free bibliography alphabetizer sorts your pasted references into A to Z order in one click. It sorts by author surname by default, can sort by title instead, and can ignore leading articles such as The, A and An so that The Quiet Garden files under Q, not T.

How sorting actually works

The tool reads one reference per line and finds the sort key for each. In author mode, the key is the surname before the first comma — so Smith, John files under Smith. If a line has no comma, the whole line is used as the key. In title mode, the key is the line itself. When the ignore-articles option is on, leading words like The, A, An and their Spanish forms El, La, Los and Las are skipped for sorting, while the full text of the reference stays unchanged in the output. Sorting is case-insensitive, so a lowercase name does not jump to the end of the list.

How to use it

  • Paste your references into the box, one reference per line.
  • Keep the ignore-articles box ticked if your list includes titles starting with The or A.
  • Tick sort by title only if your style orders the list by title, which is rare.
  • Keep numbering ticked if you want a numbered list for checking.
  • Click Sort references, then copy the result or download it as a text file.
  • Paste the sorted list into your document and apply a hanging indent if your style needs one.

A worked example

Paste these three lines in any order: Smith, John. A Study of Rivers. / Adams, Mary. The Quiet Garden. / The Quiet Garden, by Adams, Mary. Sorted by author, the result is Adams first, then Smith, then the title-first line under its own key. With ignore-articles on, a title-first entry starting with The files under its next word. That small rule matters: style guides are clear that leading articles are ignored when alphabetising, and markers do notice entries filed under T that should sit elsewhere.

Tips for a clean reference list

First, make every entry use the same shape before you sort — mixed shapes sort oddly, because the tool can only read the pattern you give it. Second, check author names for typos before sorting; a misspelt surname files in the wrong place and is hard to spot afterwards. Third, sort after you have finished adding sources, not during drafting, or new entries will land out of order again. Fourth, watch for corporate authors and names starting with Mc or Mac, which some style guides file differently; check your guide if your list has many of them. Finally, remember the tool sorts lines, not full paragraphs: if a reference wraps over two lines in your document, join it into one line before pasting.

Sorting names with prefixes

A few surnames need extra care when you sort. Names starting with prefixes such as de, van or von are filed differently by different style guides: some file under the prefix and some under the main part of the name. The same applies to hyphenated surnames and names with apostrophes. If your list has several such names, check your style guide’s rule once and apply it consistently, rather than guessing entry by entry. Consistency matters more than any single choice, because a list that mixes two rules looks unsorted even when each entry was placed deliberately.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does it change my references? No. It only reorders the lines; the text of each reference stays exactly as you pasted it.
  • What about numbered styles like Vancouver? Vancouver lists are in citation order, not alphabetical, so do not alphabetise a Vancouver list.
  • Can it remove duplicates? No. Read through the sorted list once — duplicates sit next to each other after sorting, so they are easy to spot and delete.
