Thesis Word Count Planner – Hit Your Thesis Word Target by Your Deadline

Use the free tool below: your data never leaves your browser — all work happens on your device, and nothing is uploaded to any server.

A thesis deadline with a word target is a project, not a single task, and projects fail when the daily work is never calculated. Many students discover too late that their remaining words divided by their remaining days means writing thousands of words a day, every day, with no room for editing. This free thesis word count planner does that division early. Tell it your total target, how much you have written, your deadline and your days off each week, and it gives you words remaining, writing days left, and a daily and weekly target you can actually follow.

How the maths works

The planner subtracts your words written from your total target to get words remaining. It counts the calendar days until your deadline, then removes your days off to get real writing days. Dividing words remaining by writing days gives your daily target, and multiplying that by your writing days per week gives your weekly target. It also shows your progress as a percentage with a bar, so you can see at a glance how far along you are. The key detail is the days off: a plan that pretends you write seven days a week will always look easier than it is, and will always fall behind.

How to use it

  • Type your total word target, for example 15,000 words.
  • Type how many words you have written so far — count only finished draft words, not notes.
  • Pick your deadline date from the calendar box.
  • Set how many days off you take each week, such as 1.
  • Click Calculate my targets and read your daily and weekly words.
  • Write that many words each writing day, and re-run the planner weekly as your count grows.

A worked example

Suppose your target is 15,000 words, you have written 4,200, your deadline is about 10 weeks away, and you take 1 day off each week. Words remaining are 10,800. With roughly 60 writing days left, your daily target is about 180 words a day, and your weekly target about 1,080 words. That is a calm, steady pace — roughly a page a day. Now imagine the same numbers with only 3 weeks left: the daily target jumps to about 540 words a day, still possible but demanding, and with no room for editing weeks. Seeing that jump early is the whole point of the tool.

Tips for hitting a thesis target

First, separate writing days from editing days in your head: the daily target counts new draft words, and editing should happen after a section is drafted, not instead of writing. Second, write the daily target first thing, before email and admin work eat the day. Third, if you beat the target one day, bank the surplus — it buys you a slow day later without breaking the plan. Fourth, track your real count each evening; a plan you never check is just a wish. Finally, protect the last two weeks before the deadline for editing, references and formatting, and aim to finish the draft before that window opens.

When the deadline moves

Deadlines sometimes move, and a moved deadline changes everything in the plan. If your deadline comes forward, re-run the planner the same day: the new daily target tells you at once whether the change is manageable or whether you must negotiate scope with your supervisor. If the deadline moves later, resist the urge to relax completely; keep a steady daily target and use the extra time for editing and a proper proofread. Either way, the planner’s job is the same: turn a vague new date into a concrete daily number before panic or complacency sets in.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do references and appendices count? That depends on your university’s rules. Set the target to the number your department counts, and check whether references are included.
  • What if my daily target looks impossible? Act early: ask your supervisor about scope, cut a section, or add writing days before the gap becomes unfixable.
  • Does the tool save my numbers? No. Everything runs in your browser, so note your targets somewhere safe.
