William “Bill” Meredith, a beloved librarian and avid supporter of Denver’s jazz community, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2024, at the age of 90. Born in Brownsville, Texas, on September 8, 1933, Bill dedicated his life to serving others and pursuing his passions, leaving an enduring legacy in the city he called home.
A Distinguished Library Career
After graduating with a degree in Business from the University of Texas at Austin and serving in the military, Bill relocated to Denver in 1960. He embarked on a successful career in the insurance industry before transitioning to the world of libraries. In 1967, he joined Denver Public Library (DPL), where his passion for knowledge and dedication to excellence quickly became apparent.
Encouraged by his colleagues, Bill earned his Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Denver, solidifying his commitment to the profession. At DPL, he rose through the ranks, holding leadership positions in the Philosophy, Psychology and Religion Department, the Business Department, and the Cherry Creek Branch Library. As Neighborhood Services Manager, he played a pivotal role in expanding library services to underserved communities.
Bill’s leadership style was marked by his unwavering support for his staff, encouraging them to pursue academic and professional growth. He retired from DPL in 1990 after 23 years of service, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service and innovation.
A Passion for Music and KUVO
Beyond his library career, Bill was a passionate music lover with a particular affinity for jazz. In 1995, he joined the volunteer team at KUVO Jazz Radio, Denver’s premier jazz station. Bill dedicated himself to the station’s mission, meticulously maintaining donor records and providing exceptional customer service.
Bill made a unique contribution to KUVO’s annual Christmas parties, creating a drink that became legendary among attendees: “Panther Sweat.” This delectable yet potent concoction added a festive touch to the celebrations.
Bill’s unwavering commitment to KUVO earned him recognition from Channel 7 as an Everyday Hero. His contributions to the station’s success and the Denver jazz scene were immeasurable.
An Adventurous Spirit
Outside of his professional and volunteer pursuits, Bill was an avid adventurer who embraced life with enthusiasm. He loved exploring the great outdoors, particularly the mountains outside of Fort Collins, where he owned a cabin. Skiing, hiking, and cycling were among his favorite pastimes.
Soccer held a special place in Bill’s heart. He possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of the sport and shared his passion with friends and family. His unwavering support for local soccer teams was a testament to his love of the game.
