Lowell Man Dies of Opioid Overdose Despite Recovery Efforts
Lowell, MA – Lowell resident Bill Giavis, 38, died on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after suffering an opioid overdose. Giavis had struggled with opioid addiction in the past but had recently overcome it and was living clean and sober.
Giavis’ Life and Legacy
Bill Giavis was born in Lowell on June 20, 1986, and was the son of Dimitri Giavis and Jill D. (Zwicker) Giavis. He was raised and educated in Westford, MA, and worked in the construction field in Tewksbury, MA. Giavis was also a talented musician and played in several bands that performed in the Boston area.
Giavis was known for his kind heart and his willingness to help others. He was a devoted son, brother, and friend, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Opioid Crisis in Lowell
The opioid crisis has had a devastating impact on Lowell and the surrounding communities. In 2023, there were 26 opioid-related overdose deaths in Lowell, and the city is on track to surpass that number in 2024.
The Lowell Police Department and other local agencies are working to combat the opioid crisis, but more needs to be done to provide treatment and support services to those struggling with addiction.

Funeral Arrangements
Visiting hours for Bill Giavis will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2024, from 4 to 7 pm at the BLAKE CHELMSFORD FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen St., CHELMSFORD. His funeral service will be held on Friday, August 2, 2024, at 11 am at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 62 Lewis St., LOWELL. Interment to follow in Westlawn Cemetery, LOWELL.
