What this tool does
The Hockey Play Diagrammer is a free online tool for hockey coaches and captains who plan breakouts and forechecks. Draws hockey plays on a rink diagram with breakouts and forecheck routes. It runs fully in your browser, so there is nothing to install, no account to create, and no file to download. You open the page, use the tool, and see the result straight away. That makes it easy to use on the sideline, in the clubhouse, or at home while you plan the week ahead.
How to use it
Start by entering your own details in the tool above. Change the default values to match your team, your players, or your session plan. Then press the main button and read the result. If the result is not quite right, change one value at a time and run it again. Small changes are easier to judge than changing everything at once, and they help you learn what each setting does. You can repeat the process as often as you like, and the tool stays free every time you use it.
Why planning like this helps
Good planning saves time and avoids confusion. When every player knows the plan before the session starts, practice runs faster and the coach spends less time explaining. A written plan also helps when a player is absent, because the replacement can read the same plan and step in without a long briefing. Over a season, small planning habits add up: fewer missed duties, fairer sharing of work, and calmer sessions for everyone involved.
A worked example
Here is a simple example. Suppose a coach places the centre low in the zone, draws a breakout pass to the winger, and adds a forecheck route, so the line knows its job before stepping on the ice. That is the kind of clear, fair result this tool is built to give. Try the same idea with your own numbers and compare the result with what you expected. If the numbers surprise you, check your inputs first, because a single typing mistake can change the whole plan.
Tips for a smooth session
Keep your lists short and up to date, and remove names that no longer belong to the team. Share the finished plan with the whole group, not just with one or two people, so nobody is surprised on the day. Print the plan or save a screenshot if you will be somewhere without a good connection. Finally, review the plan after the session and note what worked, so next week starts from a better place than this week did.
Common questions
Do I need an account to use this tool? No, it works without sign-up and without payment. Can I use it on a phone? Yes, it runs in a normal mobile browser, although a larger screen makes diagrams and tables easier to read. Is my data stored anywhere? No, everything you enter stays in your own browser for that session. Can I use it for more than one team? Yes, just run it again with the other team details and keep a separate copy of each plan.
Different ages and levels need different plans. Younger players do better with short, simple tasks and plenty of breaks, while older players can handle longer blocks and more detail. If your group mixes beginners and experienced players, give beginners a simpler version of the same task instead of a completely different job. That way everyone practises together and nobody feels left out. Check the plan again when the group changes, because a plan that worked for ten players may need a new shape for twenty.
Try the Hockey Play Diagrammer now with your own team details. A few minutes of planning today can make the next session run much more smoothly, and the tool will be here whenever you need it again.
