Marie Ann Fitzgerald Varney, a longtime resident of Waterville, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2023, at the age of 90. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Marie was born on January 1, 1933, in Waterville, Maine, to John and Mary Fitzgerald. She graduated from Waterville High School in 1951 and went on to earn her nursing degree from the University of Maine at Augusta in 1955.

Marie worked as a registered nurse at Waterville Osteopathic Hospital for over 30 years. She was a dedicated and compassionate nurse who always put her patients first. She was also a member of the American Nurses Association and the Maine Nurses Association.

In her spare time, Marie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and gardening. She was also a member of the Waterville Historical Society and the Waterville Public Library.

Marie was predeceased by her parents, her husband, George Varney, and her two brothers, John and Thomas Fitzgerald. She is survived by her three children, Ann Marie Varney of Waterville, John Varney of Augusta, and Susan Varney of Portland; her four grandchildren, Sarah, Emily, Matthew, and Michael; and her two great-grandchildren, Lily and Ethan.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at 10 a.m., at the Veilleux-Reddington-Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Waterville. Burial will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, 78 Grove Street, Waterville.
