Winter storm safety: preparing for severe weather
## Winter Weather Alert: Stay Safe on the Roads and at Home

With wintry weather impacting many parts of the state, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) urges drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution. Extreme cold, freezing rain, ice, and snow create hazardous conditions. Colonel Freeman Martin of DPS advises, “Plan ahead, check road conditions, and adjust your driving for the type of roads you’re traveling on. These simple steps can significantly improve safety this winter.” High-risk areas include Northeast Houston and surrounding cities like Cleveland and Livingston, according to KPRC 2 meteorologists. The KPRC Storm Tracker 2 app will provide weather alerts.

Preparing for Winter Weather:

To ensure safety and warmth, whether traveling or staying indoors, follow these essential tips:

1. Prepping Your Vehicle: Before venturing out, prepare your car for winter conditions. A pre-trip checklist should include checking tire pressure, ensuring sufficient windshield washer fluid (with de-icer), and confirming the functionality of your heating system and lights. Don’t forget an emergency kit containing warm clothes, food, water, and a portable phone charger.

2. Road Trip or Stay Home?: Consider the severity of the weather before traveling. If conditions are hazardous, postponing your trip is advisable. Prioritize safety over convenience. Monitor weather reports and road closures before making a decision.

3. Staying Warm Indoors: Maintain a safe and comfortable home environment during winter weather. Ensure your heating system is functioning properly and consider insulating exposed pipes to prevent freezing. Have a plan for alternative heating if necessary.

4. Checking on Loved Ones: Winter can be particularly challenging for the elderly or individuals with health concerns. Take the time to check in on family and friends, offering assistance if needed.
