The Karnataka Transport Department has extended the deadline for High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) installation for the sixth time, granting vehicle owners until January 31, 2024, to comply. This latest extension comes in response to the significant number of vehicle owners who have yet to install the mandatory plates, despite previous deadlines and notifications.
The HSRP mandate applies to all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. While Karnataka has approximately two crore older vehicles, only 55 lakh have been fitted with the security plates to date. This considerable shortfall prompted the department to offer another opportunity for compliance.
Failure to install HSRPs will result in restrictions on essential vehicle-related services. These include address changes, the issuance of duplicate registration certificates (RCs), and insurance processing. The state government implemented the HSRP requirement to enhance vehicle security, prevent fraud, and curb theft through a standardized registration system.
Officials within the state transport department have emphasized that January 31, 2024, is the final deadline. No further extensions will be granted. Vehicle owners are urged to install their HSRPs before this date to avoid disruptions to their vehicle-related transactions.
