Namchi Road Widening: MLA Inspects Options
Namchi MLA Satish Chandra Rai led a recent inspection of Namchi town’s roads to address concerns about traffic congestion and infrastructure improvements. The inspection, conducted by “Team Namchi,” aimed to identify road encroachments, explore options for widening Jorethang Road and other key arteries, and assess the feasibility of constructing a new car parking plaza. Team Namchi includes Namchi District Collector Anupa Tamling and former MLA Krishna Kumari Rai, underscoring a collaborative approach to Namchi’s beautification and development.

The team’s on-site assessment covered Jorethang Road, Bhanjyang Road, and the existing car parking plaza. MLA Rai highlighted that the initiative directly responds to citizen complaints regarding traffic restrictions caused by roadside encroachments and haphazard parking. To alleviate these issues, particularly the parking congestion stemming from vehicles accessing Namchi via Bhanjyang Road, he proposed the construction of a new parking plaza at the Namchi Food Godown. He further suggested relocating the food godown to either Jorethang Road or Kopchey to facilitate this project.

The inspection involved a diverse group, including the Namchi SDM, Assistant and Junior Engineers from the Department of Roads & Bridges, representatives from Namchi Smart City Pvt Ltd, district-level Sikkim Krantikari Morcha executives, and local youth. Following the road assessment, MLA Rai visited the Namchi District Hospital to investigate complaints about the quality of materials used and delays in service provision. He sought clarification on these concerns to ensure the hospital meets the needs of the community.
