Some names feel young and some feel old — and that feeling is usually right. This free Age Guesser turns it into a number: type any first name and it estimates the average age of everyone who carries it, calculated from millions of real records collected by the Agify service. Try your own name, your parents’ names, or the name you are thinking of for a baby, and see whether the crowd agrees with your instincts.
How the Age Guesser works
Behind the simple box sits a very large pile of data. Agify has counted how many people with each first name appear in public records at each age, across many countries, and this tool simply asks that database what it knows. When you search for a name, it returns two things: the estimated average age and the number of records the estimate rests on. A name like Michael, carried by generations of adults, comes back with an average in the late fifties and a sample of hundreds of thousands. A fashionable recent name comes back much younger, because most of the people who bear it are still children or teenagers.
How to use it
Type a first name only — surnames confuse the estimate, because the data is organised by given names. Press Guess the age and read the result card: the big number is the estimated average age, and underneath it you can see exactly how many records support it. Treat the record count as a confidence meter. An estimate built on two million records is stable; one built on forty records is a rough hint, and for very rare names the tool will honestly tell you it has no data at all.
Why names have ages at all
Names move in fashions, just like clothes. A name that peaks in the 1950s belongs mostly to people now in their seventies; a name that exploded after a famous film or singer belongs mostly to the young. That is why the tool works: it is really measuring the era when a name was popular. It also explains the surprises. Names that have been steadily used for centuries land in the middle, names revived by grandparents’ fashion land in two humps at once, and the average quietly smooths all of that into a single figure.
Fun things to try
Compare the generations in your own family — grandparents, parents, children — and watch the averages march down the decades. Test celebrity names, historical names, and the names on a classroom list. Baby-name hunters use it in reverse: if you want a name that feels fresh rather than dated, look for one whose average age is low but whose record count is already healthy, which means real parents are choosing it right now.
Limitations worth knowing
This is a statistical estimate about a name, never a fact about a person — plenty of twenty-year-olds carry “old” names and plenty of pensioners carry “young” ones. The data also leans towards the countries and platforms it was collected from, so results for names from under-represented regions rest on thinner samples. And because it is an average, it hides the spread: a name used evenly for a century and a name used in two sharp bursts can share the same average while meaning very different things.
Age Guesser – frequently asked questions
Is the Age Guesser free?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no sign-up, and you can check as many names as you like.
Where does the age estimate come from?
From the Agify database, which aggregates the ages of millions of people by first name from public records around the world. The tool shows you the record count behind every estimate.
Can it guess the age of a specific person?
No. It estimates the average age of everyone with that first name. It knows nothing about any individual, and your searches are not stored by this page.
Why did my name return no result?
Very rare, newly invented or unusually spelled names may not appear in the database yet. Try the most common spelling, or check how the name is usually written in its country of origin.
