Several people were forced to leave their homes after an apartment fire in Nanaimo on Saturday morning.

The fire broke out at 9 a.m. at Riverbend Terrace Apartments on Millstone Avenue. While everyone managed to escape, at least one pet died in the fire, according to firefighters.

There are 14 units in the building, and after the fire alarm sounded, the residents quickly ran outside to safety.

“You could see the smoke. You could actually smell it, and I have two kids at home, but we got them out. They did it – said Bailey Dalman, one of the evicted tenants.

“I live in the back and it was just flames coming out the window…” said Kirk Lowrie, another evicted tenant.

Lowrie went to the neighbor’s unit and rescued their dog just in case.

Another neighbor says he had to help the resident of the apartment where the fire broke out jump over the balcony fence to escape the fire. BC EMS paramedics treated her for smoke inhalation.

When firefighters arrived on scene, thick smoke was billowing from units in front and behind the building.

“The demanding fire in the back parking lot is underground so the height was an issue for us, but the crews worked quickly and we were able to get the fire under control within minutes,” said Cpt. Chad Porter with Nanaimo Fire Rescue.

Officials say there was significant damage to apartments on the first and second floors, including four apartments damaged by a combination of smoke, fire and water.

Unfortunately, a cat from a second floor unit died in the fire and several other cats are still missing.

“We have emergency services supporting displaced residents and a regional county bus coming to pick people up and keep them warm during this process,” Porter said.

Any evicted residents who had nowhere else to stay will be housed in a motel while officials work to secure the building and services before they are allowed to return.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is scheduled for Monday.
