Alabama linebacker's 2025 eligibility hinges on Diego Pavia ruling.

Alabama football could potentially benefit from a federal judge’s ruling impacting Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia’s eligibility. The ruling allows Pavia to play in 2025 without counting his junior college time against his eligibility. This decision could have positive ramifications for Alabama linebacker Justin Jefferson, potentially extending his time with the Crimson Tide.

Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kane Wommack expressed optimism about Jefferson’s return for the 2024 season. “I think we’re really optimistic about JJ coming back for next season, something he wants to do,” Wommack stated. With Deontae Lawson and Jihaad Campbell potentially leaving for the NFL, retaining Jefferson would fill a crucial hole in the middle of the defense. Jefferson, a 6-foot-1, 228-pound linebacker, started two games this season, accumulating 51 tackles, two sacks, and 5.5 tackles for loss. He joined Alabama from Pearl River Community College in 2023.

Pavia’s lawsuit against the NCAA challenged the organization’s rule counting junior college years against eligibility, arguing it violated antitrust laws by restricting NIL earning potential. The preliminary injunction granted to Pavia applies only to him for next season. However, to prevent similar lawsuits, the NCAA granted a waiver for 2025-26 to players with a year or more of junior college experience.

Meanwhile, Alabama is preparing for the ReliaQuest Bowl against Michigan, scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN at Raymond James Stadium.
