Ken and Diane Wilson, an Apollo Beach couple, have discovered a fulfilling post-retirement venture: crafting and decorating birdhouses and feeders. Their collaboration seamlessly blends Ken’s woodworking expertise with Diane’s burgeoning artistic talent, creating unique and high-quality products.
Their journey began unexpectedly. As Ken recounts, “We were watching something on television that sparked a related interest,” prompting Diane to suggest he build her a birdhouse to alleviate his boredom. This seemingly simple request ignited a passion. Ken, a former woodshop teacher and postal worker with decades of woodworking experience, readily embraced the challenge. His first birdhouse led to another, and another, until he had a burgeoning collection.
Initially, Diane had no painting experience. Ken recalls wondering if she could handle the task of decorating the finished wood. However, her artistic abilities quickly blossomed. “I try really hard,” Diane modestly states, despite creating colorful and intricate designs that are now a hallmark of their work.
Their enterprise, “Birdhouse Showcase,” has grown significantly. What began with a few birdhouses displayed at craft fairs now boasts nine display poles at events like the Winthrop Christmas Tree Lighting and Holiday Market. Their dedication to quality is evident in their use of premium materials and a marine-grade sealant that protects the paint, even after two years of outdoor exposure. Their designs incorporate thoughtful features such as multiple drainage rows in the feeders to prevent clogging and easily removable nest compartments in the birdhouses.
Their partnership extends beyond their business. The Wilsons met at the post office and reconnected years later at Home Depot. This serendipitous meeting led to a shared passion that has transformed into a successful and rewarding endeavor. While initially uncertain about their venture’s potential, Ken admits, “We figured maybe we can sell these things,” a decision that has allowed them to enjoy a creative outlet while supplementing their income.
Today, the Wilsons find immense satisfaction in their work, creating beautiful and functional birdhouses and feeders while enjoying the fruits of their labor. Ken proudly proclaims, “It wasn’t all that great in the beginning, but now it’s great and I love it,” highlighting his wife’s artistic growth and the overall success of their enterprise.
