Variety’s annual Palm Springs brunch celebrated cinematic excellence, honoring Jennifer Lopez, Ralph Fiennes, Cynthia Erivo, and Jacques Audiard. The event, a highlight of the 10 Directors to Watch and Creative Impact Awards, saw a heartwarming reunion between Lopez and Fiennes, who presented Lopez with the Legend and Groundbreakers award.
Fiennes, referencing their shared experience on “Maid in Manhattan,” delivered a charmingly theatrical speech, comparing Lopez’s journey to that of her character – a seemingly ordinary maid harboring extraordinary potential. He praised her tenacity and creative spirit, culminating in a humorous nod to her impressive pole dancing skills showcased in “Hustlers.” Lopez, in her acceptance speech, playfully acknowledged their “hotel” encounters and spoke movingly about defying expectations to achieve her Hollywood dreams. She emphasized the lack of a clear path to success, highlighting the importance of perseverance and self-belief in overcoming obstacles.
The brunch also recognized outstanding creative contributions beyond acting. Cynthia Erivo, star of “Wicked,” received the Creative Impact in Acting Award, presented by her co-star Ariana Grande. Erivo shared her profound appreciation for the film’s impact on its audience, emphasizing the power of art to inspire and motivate. Jacques Audiard, director of “Emilia Perez,” accepted the Creative Impact in Directing award from his cast, a moment he described as particularly meaningful.
Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch were also celebrated, showcasing the promising talents of Durga Chew-Bose (“Bonjour Tristesse”), Coralie Fargeat (“The Substance”), David Fortune (“Color Book”), Drew Hancock (“Companion”), Zoe Kravitz (“Blink Twice”), Tom Nesher (“Come Closer”), Halina Reijn (“Babygirl”), James Sweeney (“Twinless”), Magnus von Horn (“The Girl With the Needle”), and Malcolm Washington (“The Piano Lesson”). The event, hosted by Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh and executive VP of global content Steven Gaydos, served as a testament to the year’s achievements in film and a celebration of the individuals shaping the future of cinema.
