Bhansali revealed that Segal underwent multiple rigorous casting rounds and emerged as the ideal choice for the role of Alamzeb. He explained that her facial features perfectly captured the essence of the character – an innocent woman trapped in the world of a courtesan.

Despite her family ties, Segal did not receive preferential treatment during the casting process. According to Bhansali, she had to demonstrate her acting abilities through numerous auditions and screen tests.
The filmmaker emphasized the importance of finding an actress who possessed a natural innocence and freshness. He believed that Segal’s countenance exuded these qualities, distinguishing her from the other candidates.

“She has a face that is exactly what Alamzeb should be, someone who doesn’t want to be a tawaif, she doesn’t talk like a tawaif, and she doesn’t walk like a tawaif,” Bhansali explained.
