Former Attorney General Bill Barr said during an interview with PBS that Trump has been “fading for months.”
“He didn’t do what the whole country was hoping for,” Barr said.
It comes after Trump announced his bid for the White House in 2024.
Former Attorney General Bill Barr said Donald Trump has been “fading for months,” adding that the former president’s stance prevented him from securing a second term.
“I think he’s been fading for months, and the recent midterm elections really burst his bubble,” Barr said during an interview on PBS’ “Firing Line” that aired Friday.
PBS’s Margaret Hoover also asked Barr about his reaction to Trump’s announcement that he is running for office again.
“I made it clear in my book over a year ago that I don’t think he’s the right person to lead the Republican Party or the country forward and I hope he steps down, so I was disappointed that he announced that,” Barr said.
Earlier this week, Trump announced he would make another attempt at the Oval Office, saying in his speech, “The American comeback begins now.”
“From now until election day in 2024… I will fight like no one has fought before,” he added.
It comes amid a slew of legal issues, including the storage of sensitive documents at Mar-a-Lago and the ongoing House investigation into the Capitol riots. The committee aired statements from Barr over the summer in which he spoke openly about how he told the president he lost the 2020 presidential election and that there was no evidence of cheating in the contest.
Barr, who resigned from the Trump administration in 2020, said that if Trump had “toned down a little bit on his belligerence and his viciousness,” he would have won the presidential election against incumbent Joe Biden.
“He did not succeed. He did not do what the whole country hoped he would rise to the occasion and take office. It’s not. So he was lucky,” Barr continued.
“He clearly does not have the qualities to unite the party, which is the first step on the way back and he should step down.”
