BJP's Mustafabad Pick: Mohan Singh Bisht
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its third list of candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections on Sunday, nominating Mohan Singh Bisht for the Mustafabad seat. This announcement follows a significant internal conflict within the party.

The nomination of Bisht is a direct consequence of the controversy surrounding the BJP’s decision to replace him with Kapil Mishra as the candidate for Karawal Nagar. Bisht, a veteran BJP leader and incumbent MLA for Karawal Nagar, had publicly and vehemently opposed this decision, labeling it a “big mistake.” He had won the seat in the 2020 Delhi elections and had been a prominent figure in Karawal Nagar politics since 1998. Initially, Bisht refused to contest from any other constituency, vowing to file his nomination from Karawal Nagar before January 17th.

The BJP’s decision to replace Bisht with Mishra, a former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, sparked considerable backlash. Mishra, who had previously defeated Bisht in the 2015 elections while representing the AAP, joined the BJP in 2019 after a period of controversy including his suspension from the AAP government following allegations of corruption and his widely publicized comments about anti-citizenship law protests. The shift in strategy, particularly the replacement of a successful incumbent like Bisht, significantly fueled the internal dissent within the BJP.

Ultimately, the party appears to have found a compromise, offering Bisht a different constituency to contest. However, the events highlight the internal tensions within the BJP’s Delhi unit leading up to the crucial February 5th elections.
