He is yet to be formally identified.

Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman Adam Dewberry said the man’s body remains trapped at the scene.

“It’s going to be a protracted and complex operation to recover the person,” he said on Friday.

“It’s likely we’re going to have to use a crane to start lifting off some of the debris.

“We are waiting on advice from engineers … depending on what that advice is and what extra plan may be required … will obviously have an effect on the time it will take for this tragic recovery.”

Dewberry added the concrete that fell on the man appeared to be part of one of the school’s buildings.

“It seems to be a part of the building has come down and it’s still unclear exactly what it is,” he said.

“It’s a significant piece, it’s on an elevated position, it is heavy and that’s why we need the crane in that removal.”

The school was open at the time of the incident but it is unclear if students or staff witnessed the incident, Dewberry said.

A crime scene has been established and Safe Work NSW has been notified.

The cause of the collapse is not yet known.
