Gonzalez said his four-year-old sister was beaten and pronounced dead at the scene.

Gonzalez said the family heard gunshots, secured a gun and called 911.

The shooting appears to be accidental. It’s unclear if any charges will be filed in connection with the shooting, but under state law arrests cannot be made in such cases in order to give the family time to grieve.

gun safety

Officials called the shooting an “easily preventable tragedy”. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office and other agencies recently launched a campaign asking people to lock their guns. They even give away free gun safes.

According to the newly formed Houston Gun Safety Coalition, 5.4 million children live in homes with unsafe guns.

There has also been a surge in the problem of guns being stolen from vehicles.

That’s why gun safes are given away for free. Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen previously stated that gun locks that loop weapons are available from his office.

“Our patrol deputies on patrol actually have these in their trunks. All you have to do is stop the cop and ask for a gun lock. Give it to you. No cost,” Rosen said.

Proper firearm storage can prevent unauthorized access, theft and accidents, officials say.

“Get a gun safe or gun lock. Keep it out of reach of children,” Gonzalez said.
