Chris Brown claims the AMA canceled his Michael Jackson tribute
Beat it, Chris Brown.
The ‘Loyal’ singer claims the band behind Sunday’s American Music Awards canceled his Michael Jackson tribute at the last minute.
Rapper from “Look at Me Now”. hit Instagram on Saturday to voice his complaints by posting a seven-minute rehearsal clip that shows his crew of dancers practicing some serious moves.
Starting with “Under the Influence”, the performance cuts to Jackson’s “Beat It”, where Brown and his dancers can be seen moving to the beat of the megahit. They even used Jackson’s iconic choreography in their renditions of other hits like “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”, “Billie Jean” and “Thriller”.
This month marks the 40th anniversary of the release of Thriller. ABC, which airs the AMAs on Sunday at 8 p.m. EST, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
“YOU ARE SERIOUS?” Brown, wearing a green silky outfit, captioned his rehearsal clip along with a hand emoji.
“WOULD have been an ama show but they canceled me for unknown reasons,” the 33-year-old artist continued in the comments.
Brown has been compared to Jackson in the past, but says the comparisons are “hatish”.
“There’s no competition with him,” Brown said in conversation with Big Boy. “Hell no. There are shrines of this man hanging in my house. Hell, I’m no better than Michael Jackson.”
Fans quickly sided with the singer in comments on Instagram, with people saying he was “sick”, he was canceled and expressing their sympathy.
“You were so excited!” wrote Taylor Terry, who toured with Brown. “The whole team on and off the court was excited!!! I’ve never come out of a rehearsal without a shiver!”
“The fact that they canceled and you STILL showed us that AMAZING performance** just goes to show what a great artist you are,” another user agreed. “It was GOLD.”
“THAT WOULD BE EXACTLY THE PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR,” wrote another.
Brown’s AMA claims come a week after excerpts from a memoir allegedly co-authored by Aaron Carter were published. The late pop star claimed to have had an awkward encounter in his underwear with Jackson as a teenager at his Neverland Ranch. The sale of Carter’s memoirs was halted this week due to opposition from those close to him. Jackson died in 2009.
While Brown is unsure why the AMA allegedly turned down his performance, his troubled past may be to blame. speculates TMZ that his ten-year quarrel with R&B superstar Rihanna could be a snub.
In 2009, Brown, who was 19 at the time, was arrested for hitting his former love, then 20 years old. He later pleaded guilty to one count of assault.
Brown has been making headlines ever since. Last year, he was accused of hit a woman during an argument at his home in Los Angeles. He was sued earlier this year for allegedly drugging and raping a woman in Miami in 2020.
In the attempt clear his name of sexual assault, the Grammy Award winner claimed the accusations were “a hoax”, saying in an Instagram story that he ended up with people “dragging me through the mud”.
He followed screenshots of messages between him and his accuser that allegedly showed that she had been trying to pursue a relationship with the singer even after the reported incident.
Despite his self-proclaimed innocence, A-list people who cuddle with Brown often face criticism online.
Earlier this year, 26-year-old R&B singer Normani was kicked out by fans for appearing in Brown’s music video for “WE (warm hug)“. In the clip, she is seen rubbing against the singer and even sharing a kiss.
Normani fans approached her, criticizing the young star for associating with Brown.
“I don’t understand why new R&B girls feel the need to work with him,” one user said he taunted in a tweetwhich prompted thousands of retweets at the time.
“Ella Mai, SHE, Chloe, now Normani. It’s disappointing. I can’t even say I understand it because he repeats his behavior towards women, kicks black women out of the clubs he’s at, and he’s been making the same song since 2012.”
