Longtime Miami basketball coach Jim Larrañaga will step down, effective immediately, according to multiple reports. The 75-year-old has led the Hurricanes since 2011, adding to a distinguished coaching career that also includes 14 seasons at George Mason, as well as stints at Bowling Green (1986-97) and American International (1977-79). He also served as an assistant coach at Virginia and Davidson.
Larrañaga’s coaching legacy is significant. He guided teams to Final Four appearances at both George Mason (2006) and Miami (2023), accumulating seven conference regular-season championships and four conference tournament titles. His teams reached the NCAA tournament 11 times. His achievements also include being named AP and Naismith National Coach of the Year in 2013 and earning his conference’s Coach of the Year award five times. Over his 41 seasons as a college head coach, he compiled a remarkable 744-508 overall record.
However, this season has seen a downturn for the Hurricanes, with a current record of 4-8 and eight losses in their last nine games. Associate head coach Bill Courtney is expected to take over coaching duties for the remainder of the season.
A press conference is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Eastern on Thursday to formally announce Larrañaga’s retirement.
