Obituary: Melvin George Mathieu

Melvin George Mathieu, 77, of Waterville, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Melvin was born in Waterville on March 15, 1947, to George and Mary (Poulin) Mathieu. He attended Waterville schools and graduated from Waterville High School in 1965.

After high school, Melvin enlisted in the United States Army and served his country honorably during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his bravery and service.

After his military service, Melvin returned to Waterville and began working as a carpenter. He was a skilled craftsman and took pride in his work. He was also a member of the Waterville VFW and the American Legion.

Melvin was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and was always there for those he loved. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Melvin is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda (Cloutier) Mathieu; his two children, Michael Mathieu and his wife, Sarah, of Waterville, and Michelle Mathieu and her husband, David, of Fairfield; his four grandchildren, Emily, Ethan, Owen, and Ava; and his two sisters, Diane Mathieu of Waterville and Denise Mathieu of Winslow.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, 2024, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Waterville. Burial with military honors will follow at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
