Ruth Lippmann Bernstein Bookey, 93, of Hallowell, Passes Away

Beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Friend

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ruth Lippmann Bernstein Bookey, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend. Ruth passed away peacefully on May 7, 2023, at the age of 93, in Augusta, Maine.

Ruth was born in Hallowell, Maine, on August 17, 1930, to Samuel and Bertha Lippmann. She grew up in Hallowell and graduated from Hallowell High School in 1948. Ruth went on to attend the University of Maine at Orono, where she earned a degree in education in 1952.

After graduating from college, Ruth began her teaching career in Hallowell. She taught for over 30 years, touching the lives of countless students. Ruth was a dedicated and passionate teacher who loved working with children. She was also an active member of the Hallowell community, serving on various boards and committees.

In 1956, Ruth married Stanley Bernstein. They had two children, David and Susan. Ruth and Stanley were married for 50 years until Stanley’s passing in 2006. In 2010, Ruth married Robert Bookey. They were married for 12 years until Robert’s passing in 2022.

Ruth was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She was always there for her family, no matter what. Ruth was also a kind and compassionate friend. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Ruth will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her children, David Bernstein and Susan Bernstein; her grandchildren, Sarah Bernstein and Michael Bernstein; and her great-grandchildren, Ethan Bernstein and Avery Bernstein.

A memorial service for Ruth will be held on August 17, 2023, at 1 p.m. at Granite Hill Estates in Hallowell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hallowell Public Library, 141 Second Street, Hallowell, ME 04347.
