Tragedy struck Hollywood this weekend with the unexpected death of filmmaker Jeff Baena. Law enforcement officials believe the 47-year-old writer and director, husband of actress Aubrey Plaza, died by suicide. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed the death early Saturday morning.
Baena was a prominent figure in independent film, perhaps best known for directing the horror-comedy *Life After Beth* and the dark comedy *Joshy*. He also co-wrote the cult classic *I Heart Huckabees* with David O. Russell. His career spanned over a dozen feature films, both writing and directing. Born and raised in Miami, he attended New York University’s film school before moving to Los Angeles to pursue his career.
Baena and Plaza, his wife since at least 2021, maintained a remarkably private relationship. Their marriage wasn’t publicly announced until Plaza referred to him as her “darling husband” in a May 2021 Instagram post. The couple’s discreet nature adds to the shock of his sudden passing.
Reports indicate that Baena was found deceased at his home by an assistant around 10:30 p.m. Friday evening. While the medical examiner has not yet officially determined the cause of death, initial reports suggest suicide.
