Elon Musk reactivated former President Donald Trump’s Twitter account Saturday night.

“People have spoken. Trump was reinstated. Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” Musk said chirpedwhich is a Latin term meaning “the voice of the people, the voice of God”.

Trump’s account was reinstated after Musk posted an online poll asking Twitter users whether the former president should be unbanned. Trump himself posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, urging his supporters to vote for him in the poll, which he ended up winning.

The final result was that 51.8% of users voted for and 48.2% against.

Trump’s follower count appears to have been reset and it is unclear if it will be added again.

Trump said earlier Saturday that he would not return to Twitter if asked about Musk’s recent poll about his suspended account.

“Truth Social has hit its peak, it’s doing phenomenally well,” Trump said of his fledgling social media venture. “And I’m staying there.”

The former president was kicked off the site after the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Twitter management said at the time that the ban was due to fears of further incitement to violence.

Trump went on to create his own platform called Truth Social, which he advertised as a space for conservatives and a rival to the liberal media. On January 6, 2021, Twitter suspended Trump’s account for 12 hours and removed several tweets that the company described as “severe violations” of its policies.

But with Musk at the helm of Twitter, Trump has been welcomed back to the site that launched his political career and became an integral part of his presidency.

“I wouldn’t be here without the tweets,” Trump once told the Financial Times.

Trump has used Twitter extensively, sometimes posting dozens of times a day, to announce official policy, disparage his political opponents or spread misinformation about the coronavirus or the 2020 election.

Twitter has temporarily suspended Trump’s campaign account for sharing a clip from “Fox & Friends” in which Trump claims children are immune to COVID-19.

Trump celebrated Musk’s takeover of the site, which was shut down on October 27 after a months-long legal battle.

Musk initially said he would lift Trump’s permanent ban, calling it “absolutely stupid.” But after its acquisition, Musk said he was delaying any major content moderation or account recovery until a new committee dedicated to those issues was formed.

Trump initially insisted he would not rejoin the platform, repeatedly expressing his disappointment with the way he was “treated” by the company.

But Twitter, one of the world’s largest social media platforms, undoubtedly gives the former president a wider audience. He has just over 4.3 million followers on Truth Social, but has amassed nearly 80 million followers during his time on Twitter.

Trump’s Truth Social platform is also facing legal problems, including a whistleblower who brought allegations to the government that Trump Media & Technology Group (Truth Social’s parent company) made “false misrepresentations” when it was trying to raise money.

Musk has previously said that Twitter unfairly infringes on free speech, leading observers to fear that his leadership could lead to the spread of misinformation or hate speech, content that Twitter currently monitors and moderates from the site.

“The reason I bought Twitter is that it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square where a wide range of beliefs can be discussed in a healthy way without resorting to violence,” Musk wrote in a statement posted on Twitter. . “Right now there is a great danger that social media will split into right-wing and left-wing extremist echo chambers, which will generate even more hatred and divide our society.”
