The Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO) was successfully blown up Thursday aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket as it lifted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

The orbiter will scour the moon for key lunar resources such as water ice, uranium and aluminum.

KPLO is actually a collaboration between Nasa and South Korea’s own space agency, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute – although the vast majority of the equipment is owned by the latter.

Musk’s company is very experienced when it comes to rocket launches, but this is actually the first time it’s gone directly to the moon.
