Several organizations in Englewood partnered to bring holiday cheer to families in need, distributing thousands of toys. The Englewood First Responders spearheaded the event, creating an atmosphere where burdens were lifted and joy abounded. Taqi Thomas, one grateful recipient, described the experience: “It’s expensive being the favorite uncle,” he said, explaining how he surprised his nieces and nephews with the free toys. His family, like many others, had faced a difficult year, marked by loss and illness. “Multiple deaths, loved ones that are sick now,” Thomas shared, “so this is a time where we just want to put a smile on their face and just see them be kids for once.”

The toy giveaway, a collaboration with Mr. Dad’s Father’s Club and Jack and Jill, provided children with multiple toys, gift cards, and even cookies. Joseph Williams of Mr. Dad’s Father’s Club emphasized the event’s impact: “We’re showing what it looks like…what you can do and the difference that you can make to somebody’s life.” Charles McKenzie, founder of Englewood First Responders, highlighted the importance of community support during challenging times: “People don’t understand what people are going through in these hard times,” he said. “We have to stick together to make it throughout our city.”

Families began lining up as early as 8 a.m. on Monday to receive some of the nearly 5,000 toys. Thirteen-year-old Nevaeh Lyke, who received a Squishmallow, summed up the experience: “I was thinking of naming her ‘Princess.'” Her mother, Janie Lyke, added, “It’s better to give than it is to receive,” reflecting on the spirit of the event. Nevaeh’s simple response when asked what she would give her family encapsulated the day’s sentiment: “All my love.”
