Remembering Robert G. Carter, a Pillar of Benicia
Robert G. Carter, known affectionately as Bob, passed away recently, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service and dedication to the Benicia community. Born in Vallejo, California, Bob was the first American-born citizen in his family, his parents having immigrated from Canada.
A Life of Service
Bob’s commitment to his community began at a young age. He served in the United States Air Force at the age of 17, where he was stationed in occupied Germany and later North Africa. After completing his military service, Bob returned home and embarked on a career as a surveyor, eventually surveying much of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
Bob’s expertise and dedication were instrumental in the construction of several major dams in California, including Exchequer Dam, Hetch Hetchy Dam, Briones Dam, and Berryessa Dam. He also served as an inspector for East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) and as a draftsman for the City of Vallejo.
A Legacy of Innovation
Bob’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish R.G. Carter Co. in 1966. The company, which operated for over 50 years until 2023, played a vital role in the development of Benicia Industrial Park. Bob’s vision and leadership helped transform the area into a thriving economic hub.
A Devoted Family Man
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bob was a devoted family man. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucy P. Carter, and is survived by his second wife, Betty Gamble. Bob was also the loving father of four children: Gregory Carter, Janet Carter, Cathy Lee Scott, and Teresa Lee Scott.
A Guiding Light
Bob Carter’s impact on the Benicia community extended far beyond his own family. He was a generous supporter of local organizations, including the Solano County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Unit, where he served as a pilot. Bob’s unwavering dedication made him a true pillar of society, a guiding light to many.
Remembering Bob Carter
A sea scatter ceremony will be held in Bob Carter’s honor on June 29th, 2024. A buffet will be served at the Union Hotel in Benicia starting at 4:30pm.
Bob Carter’s legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey.
