An eighth person has died as a result of a fiery crash that claimed the lives of a young family when a wrong-way car ploughed into their vehicle on an interstate highway in Illinois.

Thomas Dobosz, 32, was driving a Chevrolet van carrying his 31-year-old wife, Lauren, and five children when it collided with an Acura TSX luxury sedan that was travelling in the wrong direction on Interstate 90 in McHenry County about 2am on Sunday, Illinois State Police said.

Both vehicles became “engulfed in flames”, killing Lauren Dobosz and the children – aged 5, 6, 7 and two 13-year-olds – and 22-year-old Acura driver Jennifer Fernandez.

Fernandez was driving in the wrong direction “for unknown reasons” before crashing into the van in the westbound lanes.

Thomas was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Centre in a serious condition, CBS News reports, but police on Wednesday confirmed he had died.

The Rolling Meadows couple was heading to Minnesota for vacation with their four children, Emma, Lucas, Nicky and Ella and their 13-year-old friend when the tragedy unfolded, according to the Chicago Sun-Times and NBC affiliate WLS-TV.

The family was heavily involved with the Oriole Park Falcons, a youth football and cheerleading program, which has since launched a GoFundMe raising more than $100,000 to help cover funeral expenses.

“Lauren always made a great impression on everyone she met, she was full of life, laughter, and always a good time,” friend Lisa Torres wrote.

“We’re going to miss you Lauren and your spunky, sweet, sassy kids and every so loved friend.”

Torres on Thursday shared the devastating news Dobosz had also died.

“Tom has gained his angel wings and is now with his amazing wife Lauren and precious children,” she said.
