Alabama experienced a significant outbreak of tornadoes over the weekend of December 28-29, 2024. As of late Tuesday, the National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed a total of nineteen tornadoes across the state, with the possibility of further confirmations pending completion of storm surveys.
The majority of these tornadoes (EF0 and EF1) were concentrated in central Alabama, characterized by their brief duration. One tornado touched down in northern Alabama, and two in the southern part of the state. The strongest tornado, an EF1 with estimated wind speeds reaching 110 mph, occurred in St. Clair County. All tornadoes recorded were categorized as either EF0 or EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, indicating relatively lower intensity. Importantly, no injuries have been reported in connection with any of these twisters.
A separate EF1 tornado, with 90 mph winds, was also recorded in Mobile County on December 27th, preceding the main outbreak. The following list details the confirmed tornadoes from December 28th and 29th, including location, date, classification, and maximum wind speeds:
